15/07/2009 - Scots pay out for dining experience
People in Scotland are the UK's biggest spenders when it comes to eating out, new research suggests.
On average, the Scottish spent £13.91 the last time they dined out, compared with a national average of £12.28. In second place are people in the south west of England, who spent an average of £13.49 on food when they last had an evening out.
But the Eating Out In The UK 2009 report, commissioned by fast food chain McDonald's, also suggested that people were cutting down the amount of money they spent on eating out because of the recession.
The report looked at eating trends in pubs, fast-food outlets, coffee shops and restaurant chains, and found that food quality was taken into consideration by two-thirds of people north of the border when choosing where to eat. It was revealed that one in 10 people in Scotland looked for organic or welfare-certified food when eating out - the highest proportion in the UK.
Steve Gotham, project director at Allegra Strategies, said: "Eating out may have become an everyday experience but when the economy picks up, people won't go back to paying over the odds for a meal."
