16/07/2009 - Shop owners victorious in board row

Shop owners in Nottingham have emerged victorious from a meeting with council officials over whether they should be allowed to display advertising boards outside city centre stores.

Nottingham City Council had planned to ban the use of A-boards after it claimed they caused access difficulties for wheelchair users and created problems for street cleaners. But after coming up against pressure from local businesses, the council backed down and pledged to work with shop owners to establish guidelines on the size and position of the boards. Business owners had argued that banning the boards would result in a loss of trade for shops located down side streets and alleyways in particular.

Speaking after the meeting, council leader Jon Collins said: "A meeting took place on Tuesday between the city council and traders to discuss A-Boards in the city centre. From my perspective I was keen to hear about their concerns and see if we could find a common sense way forward, and I think that's what we've done. There will be some guidelines which we will work out with traders."
