14/07/2009 - Welsh shopkeepers oppose `bag tax`
A proposed "bag tax" has been opposed by the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) in Wales on the grounds that it might dissuade people from using local shops.
Says chief executive James Lowman: "A bag tax will make people think twice about popping into the local shop, resulting in more shopping trips by car that would actually do more harm than good."
He was responding to proposals by Welsh environment minister Jane Davidson that a charge should be imposed on all single-use carrier bags in the principality.
But says Mr Lowman: "Local shops across Wales are leading the way in reducing bag waste. Voluntary initiatives to encourage bag re-use, including charging and incentive schemes, are changing attitudes and behaviours. Imposing a compulsory charge on every shop and every customer will undermine the voluntary initiative and risks alienating consumers and communities.
"Encouraging more local shopping is a key part of encouraging more sustainable living. Customers popping to the local shops on foot or calling in on the way home save thousands of food miles."
