24/06/2009 - Discount store opens in ex-Woolies

A family will open up an 89p discount store in a former branch of Woolworths.

The store will offer Woolworth's favourites such as the pick-and-mix but will also offer jewellery, DIY products, cosmetics, household goods and other items for 89p less.

If the More For Less 89 Pence Stores prove to be a success, the family hope to open four others by Christmas having already opened talks over premises in Dorset and Bournemouth.

After Woolworths went into administration last November with debts of £385 million, the branch in Parkstone, Poole was one of 815 stores that were closed.

The lease for the 4,500 sq ft store was taken over by siblings Anoushka Annauth, 25, Kreeshan Annauth, 22, and Neeshe Dinya, 37.

Mrs Dinya's mother Sadhna had told her about the American one-dollar stores and the idea for the 89 Pence store started from there.

She said: "In these times we want to help people as much as possible," she said.

Charlie Oldham took on the manager's role after being made redundant. The store has created seven full-time positions and 12 part-time and Mr Oldham has already contacted all the former Woolies employees and hopes to give them their jobs back.
