16/06/2009 - Pressure too much for some bosses

The strain of the recession is causing bosses to resort to increasingly bizarre forms of motivation just to make their staff work harder.

Research by campaign group Keep Britain Working showed more than half of managers had become worse at motivating their workers since the start of the economic downturn.

The study found one boss brought in his hunting rifle and pretended to fire it at staff to make them work harder, while another chanted 'Hit this target, keep your job'.

And one manager even made his staff clean toilets in order to save on cash, the research showed.

Of the 1,600 workers surveyed, one in three said their managers had increased their criticism of staff, while a similar number 'hid themselves away'.

James Reed, founder of Keep Britain Working said: "Bosses need to realise that they have a huge effect on those around them, and that no matter how they feel, their first responsibility is to do more to motivate staff.

"This will lead to greater productivity and help people make the most of any new opportunities. As a result it is far more likely that organisations will survive and thrive, create new jobs and keep people working."
