30/06/2009 - Sewage floods Manchester stadium

The City of Manchester stadium, which was built for the Commonwealth Games in 2002, has been badly affected after sewage leaked from a collapsed drain.

Part of Alan Turing Way between the Asda supermarket and Oldham Road was closed as fire crews pumped water from ground floor offices, a store room and lift shafts at the stadium.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "At the height of the incident the lift shafts contained over three metres of water."

Mancunian Way was also affected by flash flooding, and staff at the city`s Midland Hotel reported damage to at least one room after water came in from a top-floor balcony.

A United Utilities spokesman commented: "It was an extremely busy weekend for our engineers due to torrential rain that hit many parts of Greater Manchester."
