02/06/2009 - Small firms shortlisted for award

A family butcher, a volunteer-run village shop and an independent department store have been shortlisted for a national consumer award, which recognises local businesses that go the extra mile for their customers.

Ten local traders are in contention for the Local Business of the Year award run by consumer magazine Which?. Hull central heating engineer Geoff Danby, Hansfords Butchers in Winscombe, Avon, and Stanleys Fruit Stores in Southport, Merseyside, are among the nominations for the accolade.

They are rubbing shoulders with big international firms like Apple, Toyota and Aldi who are also shortlisted for awards, the winners of which will be announced on June 9. Apple's iPhone 3G, BBC iPlayer and Ariel Excel Gel are all vying for a new Innovation Award, which recognises products and services with the potential to revolutionise people's lives.

Which? chief executive, Peter Vicary-Smith, said: "Tens of thousands of consumers have nominated their favourite local trader or local restaurant for a Which? Award. We're delighted to recognise these often unsung heroes alongside a host of well-known names, as we celebrate the best products and services available to UK consumers."
