15/06/2009 - UK's highest cafe opens on Snowdon

A cafe on the peak of Mount Snowdon has reopened for business as part of an £8 million visitor centre.

At 3,560ft it is the highest cafe in the UK and an official ceremony attended by Rhodri Morgan, the First Minister of Wales, will mark its opening.

The centre, called Hafod Eryri, at the top of the highest mountain in England and Wales, has been designed by architect Ray Hole and offers views from a "window on the world" wall of glass at the front of the building.

It is constructed of granite capable of withstanding the extreme weather conditions for which the mountain is famous.

Tegwyn Williams, site manager for contractors Carillion, said: "More than once I've thought we'd never get here

"We've had days when we could not get here. But it's good to see it finished and it looks good."

As well as a cafe there is also a shop area, toilets, a lift for the disabled, and the building can be used as an education centre.
