16/06/2009 - Wedding bills cost firms £10,000
A £10,000 Jersey wedding has left a string of businesses out of pocket after the happy couple allegedly decamped without paying.
Companies that provided the reception, flowers, marquee, cake, and hotel rooms were all taken in by the couple from Devon, named as Alan Bennett and Lorraine Vickery.
Said David Bridges, owner of the Bleu Soleil campsite, where the wedding reception was held: "A couple came over here, I understand from Exeter, in February for their wedding after contacting me about holding it here just before Christmas. They held their reception here at the Bleu Soleil and had a marquee installed here, but the cheque they used to pay for it bounced. I understand they also used a local florist and bought their wedding cake here, but the cheques for those bounced as well. I am still trying to get payment."
Detective Inspector Kevin Malloy, of Jersey CID, said: "After complaints from members of the public, a police investigation is ongoing. It is alleged that a couple entered the island for the purposes of getting married and as a result a number of complaints were made with regards to potential frauds."
