18/03/2009 - Pair stole £1,600 of KFC chicken

A pair of opportunists stole a freezer full of KFC chicken worth £1,600 after spotting it outside one of its fast food branches, a court has heard.

Mark Gregory and Ricky Hallam towed the £6,500 freezer away with their 4x4 but were caught because of a tracking device in the 300 foot storage unit, Derby Crown Court was told. Hallam, 23, of Bridge Street, Cotmanhay, Derbys, and Gregory, also 23, of Kirkby Avenue, Ilkeston, Derbys, pleaded guilty to the theft.

In mitigation, barristers for Hallam and Gregory said the theft, from outside the Long Eaton KFC in Derbyshire, had been a one-off "spur of the moment" decision.

Prosecuting, Marilyn Nair told the court: "The defendant Hallam said he had been driving around Long Eaton when he saw the freezer. He was waiting for some food when a worker came outside to get some from it. He made a joke, saying 'Where's mine?', and the person replied 'Help yourself'."

Handing the pair a community sentence of 100 hours unpaid work, Judge Abbas Mithani told them: "This was a very silly thing for both of you to have done. What you thought you were doing completely bewilders me."
