20/03/2009 - Shop only serves English-speakers

A Sri Lankan postmaster has decided that he will only serve customers who speak English.

Deva Kumarasiri, who runs Sneinton Boulevard Post Office in Nottingham, said he struggles to understand customers who do not speak English and said anyone moving to the country should learn the language.

Therefore he has decided to refuse to serve people who do not speak English in his shop, which is in a culturally diverse part of Nottingham.

The 40-year-old, who has two children, moved to Britain from Sri Lanka 18 years ago.

He said: "I've always thought I'm a British person. We have a situation now where British culture is going down so I decided it's time somebody had to put it right.

"My feeling is that when you move to a different country you have to respect the flag and the language, but that has gone. I give my country a service and it's necessary for me to learn and understand the language.

He added: "Everything is written in English, the law is written in English. If people can't understand, they can't read and they can't write, how can they support this country? Working class people, whether we are white, black or Asian, we're all proud to be British. We want to say that to everybody."
