28/05/2009 - Call for tourist information in pubs

Tourism chiefs have launched a campaign calling for pub landlords to offer information to customers as well as a pint.

VisitEngland would like to see local pubs becoming unofficial tourist information centres. The organisation has joined forces with The Publican magazine for the Inn England campaign in a bid to promote pubs as local tourism hotspots, hoping that landlords will return the favour and publicise local tourist attractions.

Amanda Smyth, head of marketing for VisitEngland said that pubs and inns should offer more than food and drink.

"Pubs are a key part of England's brand, our history and way of life. They are often the cornerstone of a local community and a great way to discover more about a destination, be it the produce on the menu, the history of the people and surroundings, or the great walks and activities in the area," she said.

Editor of The Publican, Caroline Nodder, said the new campaign will remind the public that the local pub holds a special place in our history and culture. She added that there has never been a better time to encourage more people to visit and be proud of English pubs.
