11/05/2009 - Fleet vehicle checks 'inadequate'

Businesses are being warned that vehicle fleets are being exposed to increased downtime and costs because of service intervals getting longer.

The RAC carried out inspections on 140 fleet vehicles and found that nine in 10 had faults that would have caused a breakdown, led to costly repairs, or rendered the vehicle legally unroadworthy.

RAC Inspections' corporate partnership manager, Alan Kennedy, said the findings revealed that some fleets were failing to conduct adequate routine maintenance checks on vehicles.

"RAC examiners often see vehicles with damaged, worn or underinflated tyres, which put drivers at risk and increases fuel consumption," he said. "Faulty brakes and steering have also been identified on certain fleets - which could easily cause a serious accident.

"Companies should look carefully at whether procedures and policies are in place to adequately maintain a vehicle to prevent fleets incurring high costs and scrutiny from the Health and Safety Executive, should an accident occur."

Mr Kennedy pointed out that manufacturer warranties often only covered vehicles for two years meaning that businesses considering extending their leases could be left without breakdown cover.

"If a vehicle doesn't comply with the law it's the driver who faces the penalty and the company could be exposed to negative publicity," he added.
