27/05/2009 - Naked woman ad complaint rejected
A complaint against a university outfitter has been rejected as an image of a semi-naked woman was unlikely to cause offence to the audience.
Jack Wills University Outfitters used the picture of a model who had a breast partially exposed in a brochure sent out to customers on request. The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) rejected the complaint as it believed the image was "not overtly sexual" and not gratuitous or inappropriate for its target audience.
The Devon-based company sent out a picture of a model sitting on a bed wearing only knickers in a brochure targeted at 18 to 22-year-olds. Jack Wills University Outfitters pointed out that the brochure was only sent to people over the age of 18 on request.
"Although we understood that some younger teenagers might view the catalogue, or sign up to receive it, we concluded that the images were not so provocative as to present a risk to teenagers or be unsuitable for the target audience," the ASA said.
"We considered that the image was not overtly sexual in content and was unlikely to cause widespread offence," the ASA added.
