05/05/2009 - Town profits from trading in Euro
Business people in the East Sussex coastal town of Rye say they have been making profits during the recession by accepting Euros from visitors.
Derick Holman of the town's Chamber of Commerce said hoteliers and shop owners have been trading in the currency for some years and it has proved to be very successful.
He said that quite a few guest houses in the area have been accepting Euro ever since it was introduced, and some also take US dollars.
He added: "We get coach-loads of French schoolchildren coming over on day trips and a lot of residents own second homes in France so it makes a lot of sense to accept it."
Mr Holman said that Rye, one of the historic port towns of the South coast, had "always been quite European".
Last month hotel owners in Bournemouth and Poole in Dorset announced that they too would be accepting the Euro.
