01/05/2009 - Warning over coastal flooding
Coastal flooding could rise by 40% over the next four decades, putting many homes and businesses at risk, an insurance trade body has warned.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) says climatologists have predicted that the sea level on the eastern coast of the country could rise by 40cm, which would put an additional 130,000 homes at risk from flooding.
The ABI has published measures for the Government to introduce to ensure that flood insurance remains available to the more than two million homeowners and businesses in areas that are at risk.
The other measures the group would like to see included in the Government's final Flood and Water Management Bill are regulating reservoirs, and community action to help reduce flood risk and to assist homeowners and businesses that cannot be defended from flooding.
Stephen Haddrill, the ABI's director general, appealed to all parties to work together to ensure that the bill delivers better flood protection in England and Wales.
