10/11/2009 - Bad managers 'force staff to quit'

A campaign to transform bad business management and leadership has been launched by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

A survey of 3,000 employees has found that half quit their jobs because of bad managers, while an equal number believe they could do better jobs than their bosses.

Half of employees would take a pay cut if they could work with a better manager, the report says.

The CMI plans to meet representatives from the three main political parties at the launch of its Manifesto for a Better Managed Britain, which says that UK firms invest less in managers than their international competitors.

Many managers admit that they have had no training, and lack the ambition to manage.

Says Ruth Spellman, chief executive at CMI: "The figures reveal the depth of the crisis of confidence in UK management and leadership and the enormous toll bad management is taking on the UK economy and people's wellbeing.

"To stay competitive internationally, the Government and employers need to address this worrying skills gap. The sad truth is that UK managers are no longer regarded as professional, competent or accountable."
