19/11/2009 - Bosses 'suspicious' of employees
Most bosses are "extremely suspicious" of the excuses employees give for being late for work, a new study has shown.
According to research of 1,000 employers, most employers admitted that they know when their staff are lying about being late - especially if they say they have been locked out of their house or are looking after a sick pet.
However, fewer than one in 10 said that they believed the excuses people gave for being late for work.
The least convincing excuses included being unable to lock a window at home, a broken house alarm, being snowed in - and feeling unwell, the study added.
Again, two-thirds of those surveyed said they could tell when a member of staff was lying about why they were late arriving at the office.
The report by esure highlighted avoiding eye contact, being late on a Monday morning, and using the same excuse again and again made employers suspicious.
