13/11/2009 - Britain braced for worst storm

Weather experts have warned that Britain is in for the worst storm of the year so far this weekend, with gale-force winds and heavy rain.

Forecasters have predicted gales could reach speeds of up to 70mph, so have advised people to postpone their Saturday shopping or travelling plans and stay indoors.

They say that strong winds are expected to wreak some damage across the UK.

The rain is expected to continue throughout Friday, with predicted gusts of between 30 and 40 mph in London and up to 60 mph in areas of west Wales.

Sunday could possibly see some let-up, while the storm will continue battering Britain on Monday, causing much disruption to commuters trying to get to work.

Stephen Davenport, of Meteogroup UK, said that while the weather will dry up overnight, the rain will only begin again in the early hours of Saturday.

He said: "It is pretty filthy weather already and it is only going to get worse. The real meat of the storm is coming overnight."
