19/11/2009 - Brown offers help for unemployed
The Prime Minister has announced a series of measures to help unemployed young people and new graduates find work and training.
During a Commons debate on the Queen's Speech, Gordon Brown said: "Today I can announce that we will offer for the first time a January guarantee; from January all 16 and 17-year-olds who are not in employment, education and training who are without a place will be guaranteed a place in learning."
In addition, there is also a new guarantee for graduates who left university this summer. They will be able to apply for a "high-quality" internship or training to set up their own business within six months of claiming benefits.
And the extra support built on existing guarantees of jobs, work experience or training for all under-25s out of work for a year and the offer of a college place, apprenticeship or training for all school leavers, he added.
Mr Brown further said new Government plans would ensure that "at no point" should young people be deprived "for any length of time" of the chance to train or work.
