26/11/2009 - Campaign to boost British pubs
Britain's pubs are set to receive a boost with the launch of a campaign to prevent closures in the sector.
The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) and the Society of Independent Brewers (Siba) are urging drinkers, publicans and politicians to contribute more to keep the pubs open.
Pubs are currently closing down at a rate of 50 a week.
I'm Backing The Pub campaign was launched by the two groups, who have published a manifesto - The Life And Soul Of British Communities - which will be launched in Westminster on Thursday, urging a reduction in the tax on beer.
Most of the 1,000 adults surveyed for an opinion poll believed the tax on beer to be very high, adding that shutdowns of pubs weakened an important part of the country's social and community fabric.
Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the BBPA, said there was deep concern at the record number of pub closures and there was a resounding call for action to support the British pub.
"It is time for a concerted effort by government, industry and all those who value the pub to work together to adopt and implement policies to promote the great British pub."
