05/11/2009 - Companies helped to beat red tape
Efforts to help companies cope with red tape and regulations are being stepped up by the Local Better Registration Office (LBRO).
It cites National Audit Office (NAO) findings that a third of businesses are having to spend more time complying with business regulations.
Says LBRO spokesman Clive Grace: "Local and national government is making genuine and determined efforts to simplify regulation and reduce the costs of compliance across a broad swathe of areas such as health and safety, environmental health and trading standards.
"We think business people can help themselves by engaging with a number of initiatives that will improve their relationships with local regulators."
Examples are primary authority agreements, which allow firms with multiple sites to deal with a single local authority, thus saving duplication of effort.
They can also take part in Trading Places, which encourages closer contact between businesses and regulators, and encourages enforcement officers to understand the impact of their decisions.
