23/11/2009 - Flood-hit firms to get £1m package
The Northwest Regional Development Agency has pledged up to £1 million for small businesses affected by the recent flooding in Cumbria.
The Agency has been working closely with Cumbria County Council, Cumbria Chamber of Commerce and the Government Office North West to offer support.
Chief executive Steven Broomhead, said: "It is crucial that funding is made available to those businesses in urgent need."
Meanwhile, householders and business owners in Cockermouth are being allowed back into their flooded properties.
About 900 homes and businesses affected by the floods in the Cumbrian town are being reopened.
But Cumbria Police said the properties will have to be checked for sewage contamination, structural stability and electrical safety before people are permitted to re-enter them.
Those who want to return to their properties in flood-ravaged Cockermouth should contact officers at the scene with identification, proof of address and their keys.
A United Utilities officer and structural engineer will inspect each building to ensure it is safe.
People going back to properties affected by the flooding are advised to wear boots and protective clothing which can be cleaned or thrown away later.
They will be given rubber gloves and an information pack with emergency contact numbers and advice.
