13/11/2009 - Office Christmas parties cut back

Office Christmas parties are to be scaled back in the wake of the recession, with fewer than four in 10 workers saying they will definitely be celebrating festivities with colleagues this year, according to research.

From the 38% who will definitely be having a party, just one in six said they would be contributing to the budget themselves. Almost a quarter (23%) of workers who will be pulling crackers said that their parties would be held on a budget.

Around 30% said they would rather not have a Christmas party at all, while the rest were unsure, according to the YouGov poll. However, the Christmas parties that do go ahead will bring £450 million to the economy, according to lastminute.com, who commissioned the research.

Just 29% of people said they wanted to celebrate with a colleague, suggesting that many will not be too disappointed to see the Christmas party fall victim to the credit crunch.

Workers tended to dread the consequences of having a few drinks in the company of colleagues, with just 5% admitting to loving the office romances that resulted from the party and 12% looking forward to the post-party gossip.
