02/11/2009 - Robber struck with baseball bat
Armed robbers brandishing an axe and hammer were stopped in their tracks by a jewellery shop owner wielding a baseball bat.
The four raiders entered Bombay jewellers, on Derby Street, Bolton, and threatened the shopkeeper, who initially retreated behind a security window.
But the defiant 46-year-old reappeared and started to hit one of the intruders with a baseball bat after the offenders smashed their way into a glass case.
The offenders left the shop empty-handed and got into a waiting red Ford Escort.
The car was later found abandoned near Lever Street, Great Lever, and a 17-year-old youth was arrested on suspicion of robbery.
The shopkeeper was not injured in the incident. The offenders are described as aged 18 to 20, Asian and between 5ft 9in and 6ft. They were all in balaclavas. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
