16/11/2009 - UK's stormy weather set to continue
High winds and heavy rain will continue to cause misery across the UK this week, according to weather experts.
Gusts of 60mph could batter exposed areas, while the north and west of the country may suffer up to six inches of rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday. Meteogroup UK, the the weather division of the Press Association, said temperatures should remain mild but predicted more heavy rain for the south on Monday night.
Forecaster Matthew Dobson said: "We expect to see quite a lot of wet weather in the north and west areas, which could lead to flooding. It is looking like there will be strong winds of 50-60mph across the north and west."
The Environment Agency issued five flood warnings and 35 watches over the weekend, and officials estimated 50 properties were breached by rising surface water. Nearly 5,000 people called the agency helpline on Sunday. A spokeswoman said more watches and warnings may come in the next few days.
She said: "Most of the current flood warnings are expected to remain in force, especially those for some of the larger catchments in Wales. Coastal flood warnings remain in force for parts of the south coast of England and in south-west Wales."
