06/10/2009 - Britons 'appreciate' good service
Eight in 10 Britons spend an average of £13.20 a month on tips despite the economic downturn, according to a survey from insurer RIAS.
It reports that while 81% people leave a tip if they get good service, 75% do so more than they did six months ago. Meanwhile, 20% have changed their tipping habits due to the recession,
The survey found that 93% of customers are not prepared to tolerate bad service, complaining if they are dissatisfied with the way they have been treated.
A third of respondents say they ask to speak to a more senior member of staff if they receive poor service, while 28% verbally complain. The same number take their business elsewhere.
Nearly 30% value good knowledge. While a third believe that receiving service with a smile is important to them, 36% dislike being attended to by rude staff, and 18% get frustrated if someone is unable to help or answer questions.
Janet Connor, managing director at RIAS, said: "Our latest research shows that good service is quite rightly being rewarded but that poor service is no longer being tolerated."
