05/10/2009 - 'Grazing' widespread among shoppers
A total of 20% of shoppers find it difficult to refrain from eating food before reaching the supermarket checkout, research has claimed.
The Grocer magazine said almost half (47%) of those who admitted to "grazing" agreed that it was little different to theft.
Just over half (52%) of those polled said presenting an empty packet at the checkout was fine, while 48% thought it was wrong.
Among 16 to 24-year-olds, the proportion who admitted to the practice was even higher, with one in three saying they had eaten food before paying for it. The number of people who thought it was unacceptable rose with age, with 55 to 64-year-olds the most disapproving.
The survey, which polled 1,050 people and was carried out by TNS Omnibus, also found 78% of people thought touching fruit and vegetables before buying was acceptable but 81% believed handling unwrapped fresh bread was not.
