29/10/2009 - KFC prosecuted over London branch
Fast food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken is being prosecuted by Westminster City Council for alleged health breaches at one of the company's busiest central London branches.
Officials claim they saw a cockroach scurry across the counter and a mouse run across the floor at the Leicester Square branch while flies buzzed around their heads.
Meanwhile, is is alleged that dried blood was found on the floor, caked grease on bread-roll containers and trays of raw chicken, dirty cloths were used to wipe food-preparation surfaces, and walls and shelves were covered in grime.
Other charges allege that mayonnaise was stored at room temperatures, food wrappers were left on the floor, there was a lack of hand-washing facilities and 14 bags of rubbish were leaking liquid onto the floor.
A City of Westminster Magistrates' Court official said KFC, based in Goldsworth Road, Surrey, pleaded not guilty to all 13 charges and a case management hearing will be held on February 22.
