10/09/2009 - Cheese-Grader Insures Nose For £5m

The nose of a master cheese-grader who selects more than 12,000 tonnes of cheddar every year has been insured for £5 million, he has revealed.

Nigel Pooley, 63, from Shepton Mallet, Somerset, will have his nose covered with Lloyds of London, something normally associated with the body parts of celebrities.

Mr Pooley, who has worked at Wyke Farms in Somerset for the past 12 years, said his nose earned the company around £1 million every week by selecting the best cheeses.

"It's nice to be valued so highly. The insurance is part of the risk assessment and in that way I'm like a piece of machinery, I'm included as an individual piece," said Mr Pooley. "If I wasn't there, in the short term, they'd have a problem ensuring the quality of the cheese. I'm the only worker that does this job for the whole company so they need to make sure they can cover my loss.

"I hadn't thought about the value of my nose before, it's just part of what I do. I suppose I took it for granted until now.

"I'm also in charge of health and safety so I'm not just eating cheese all day long. I love what I do and I will continue doing it."
