09/09/2009 - Crime-fighting cash for shopkeepers

Crime-fighting grants of up to £3,000 are set to help Burnley shopkeepers tackle robbery, shoplifting and anti-social behaviour.

The money will fund CCTV cameras, alarms and security grills, while groups of shops in certain areas can apply for up to £50,000 to improve the whole area.

The Small Retailers Capital Grant Fund scheme is backed by the town`s Community Safety Partnership (CSP), and Burnley is one of 50 priority areas targeted by by the Home Office.

Says CSP chairman Charlie Briggs: "Anything that helps shop owners cut crime, especially in times of economic difficulties, has got to be welcomed."

The grants cover five themes aimed at making shopping districts more attractive by reducing the risk of crime and providing visible reassurance that areas are safe.

They also support particularly vulnerable shopkeepers, including those in rural and minority communities where crime is a particular problem.

Information about the scheme has been sent to retailers across Burnley and Padiham, who have got until September 30 to apply.
