01/09/2009 - Early Christmas card threats issued
A menacing campaign to stop shops selling Christmas cards before November is being investigated by police.
Letters threatening to glue up locks have been sent to three charity shops and a newsagents in Headingley, Leeds.
A letter sent to Clive Barker, manager of the Oxfam shop in Otley Road, reads: "This is a very polite but very serious reminder not to display Xmas cards until 1st Nov. We will put super glue into your locks if you do."
Shop owners are worried about the costs getting locks fixed will place on them or affect their shop insurance.
Mental health charity shop Mind on St Michael's Road has already had its locks glued and Mr Barker said that he received the threat on August 24. He described how he does not know what to expect each that day he comes to work.
He said: "Every morning I wonder if I am going to be able to open up or will the lock be glued up. We are not going to take our cards down as we are a charity and we raise money for all the Oxfam projects."
