23/09/2009 - Firms to oppose parking space ta'

Businesses in Nottingham may contribute to a "fighting fund" to legally challenge the first parking levy in the country imposed by Nottingham City Council earlier this month.

The council has approved a tax of around £250 per place on businesses with more than 10 parking spaces for employees, and expects to raise £14 million annually after it comes into force in April 2012.

But the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce has held a meeting of businesses to discuss a strategy to counter the move.

John Dowson, head of policy, said: "We will be writing to all those on our database that we think are likely to be affected to assess their views about whether they want to contribute towards a fighting fund for legal remedies."

He said: "The Chamber of Commerce can't afford to go it alone, but what we can do is co-ordinate those who can do it."

Mr Dowson felt that a change in Government could impact the future of the parking space tax, and added: "We are seeing how much people are prepared to put in. I dare say what we'll do when we get the responses is have another meeting of those who are willing to help."
