15/09/2009 - Hotel room prices at five-year low
A new price index has shown that UK hotel rooms were the cheapest for five years in the first half of this year.
Some one-night-stay prices dropped by as much as 33%, with the average price for the first half of this year falling from £99 in January-June 2008 to £83 - a drop of 16%.
One-night costs in Southampton averaged £57, a drop of 33%. Prices dropped in Belfast by 29%, 25% in Aberdeen, 24% in Sheffield and 22% in Nottingham, the price index by Hotels.com revealed.
Average prices in the capital fell to £101, down 12%. But despite a 6% reduction on Bath's January-June 2008 price, the city remained the costliest, with hotels charging £111 per room for a night.
Couples on a seven-day vacation in the UK would save £112 each on hotel rooms this year on average when compared to last, with much higher savings in major cities.
David Roche, Hotels.com worldwide president, said: "We were expecting 2009 to be a year of dramatic price reductions and, so far, it has been. The UK is no exception to this and is now a more affordable and attractive destination than ever."
