16/09/2009 - Pub violence warning in Scotland
In three Scottish cities there were 3,200 assaults, rapes, breaches of the peace and antisocial behaviour incidents in 2008-09 in and around pubs, according to MSP Brian Adam.
They include 1,200 in Aberdeen, 1,500 in Dundee and 500 in Perth, which he says are likely to continue despite recent changes to the licensing laws.
He says: "New licensing changes will mean an end to cut-price deals in pubs and clubs. But as increasing numbers of people drink at home before hitting the city centre on a Friday or Saturday night, the problems will continue."
He says that while pubs and clubs that report incidents do their job well, "tackling this problem requires police and licensed premises working together - it also means taking action over Scotland's relationship with alcohol."
