21/09/2009 - Student rent soars in Scotland

Landlords in Scotland have charged bigger rent increases in the last two years than any other area of the UK, research has claimed.

Flat share website spareroom.co.uk said people studying at the University of St Andrew's could now expect to pay an average of 15.4% more to rent a room in a shared house than they would have in 2007. Student rents in Aberdeen also went up by 10.4%.

Unsurprisingly, London is the most expensive city, with an average monthly fee of £494. This is followed by Oxford and Reading, at £383.

Average student rents in Warwick fell by 7.2% in the same period. Hull also experienced a 4.9% drop because of the large number of available properties.

At the other end of the scale, students in Birmingham and Exeter have seen the biggest increases for university towns in England, with the cost of renting a room rising by 7.6% since 2007.
