30/09/2009 - Welsh minister seeks sunbed ban
Edwina Hart, the health minister for Wales, has outlined plans to ban all under-18s from using sunbeds in the country.
Mrs Hart revealed in papers submitted to a cross-party committee at the Welsh Assembly that sunbeds increased the risk of cancer and were being used frequently by children.
"I am particularly concerned about the use of sunbeds by people under the age of 18 and by the use of coin-operated sunbeds," she said.
Mrs Hart added that it is her "intention to prohibit the use of sunbeds", both for people under 18 years of age, and in all unstaffed salons in Wales.
In order to bring about the legislation, officials could seek to draw down new powers from Westminster. The plans for the sunbed ban follow on from those set to come into place in Scotland. Sunbed operators will be prevented from serving under-18s and running unmanned salons from November.
