07/04/2010 - Coffee break saves factory worker

A Manchester factory worker has described how he narrowly escaped death after an iron girder crashed into his workbench while he left to make a cup of coffee.

Father-of-four Dave Lomas suffered injuries to his chest and arm when a high pressure machine used to make rubber rollers exploded, sending a 5ft girder into his work bench and raising the factory roof.

Mr Lomas was blown off his feet by the blast, which rocked the site on Hoyle Street, Manchester.

The Health and Safety Executive subsequently brought a case against the Moseley Rubber Company for failing to maintain machinery.

Moseley pleaded guilty to breaching Regulations 9(1)(a) and 12 of the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 by failing to arrange a routine inspection of the machine and by failing to maintain it and was fined £10,000 at Trafford Magistrates' Court.

The company was also ordered to pay an additional £8,153 towards the cost of the prosecution.
