23/04/2010 - Explosion closes shopping street

An electrical explosion partially closed one of London's busiest shopping streets on Thursday evening, emergency services have confirmed.

Nine crews from the London Fire Brigade (LFB) attended the scene on Oxford Street. Bond Street tube station was closed and the road between Bond Street and Oxford Circus was temporarily shut to traffic.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called at 8pm to reports of an electrical fault having caused an explosion at the Foot Locker retail store, opposite Bond Street tube station, Oxford Street.

"Upon attendance, London Fire Brigade began investigation into the cause," he said. "It is believed that there are no persons injured. This is not being treated as a terrorist incident."

A LFB spokesman said it appeared an electrical junction box had been damaged by the explosion. EDF Energy is investigating the matter.
