12/04/2010 - Fire tears through public school

A public school has been engulfed with fire but there were thankfully no injuries as the pupils were at home during the Easter break.

As many as 70 firefighters tackled the blaze at the Malvern College in Worcestershire. Around half of the building was saved by Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service.

The fire started at around 4am on Saturday.

Fire service group manager Mark Preece said: "On arrival at the scene our firefighters were faced with a very severe fire which had taken hold in one of the accommodation blocks.

"Thankfully, as it is the Easter holidays, the block was empty."

An investigation into the cause of the fire is now under way and crews remained at the college, which was founded in 1865, for the rest of the day.

Eleven fire engines attended the incident, including an aerial platform from Worcester Fire Station and an environmental protection unit based in Stourport.

Mr Preece added: "Firefighters worked extremely hard to deal with the fire and thanks to their efforts they managed to create a break in the fire to stop it spreading further."
