23/04/2010 - Man fined after worker hurt in fall

The Health and Safety Executive has warned firms about working at height after an employer was fined when a worker broke both his legs in a fall from a roof.

Robert Peter Mackie, 36, from the Turriff area, who was trading as RDM Engineering at the time of the incident, pleaded guilty at Banff Sherriff Court to breaching health and safety regulations. He was fined £15,000.

The employee was injured when he slipped off a roof while working on a building at Little Hilton Farm, near Turriff, Aberdeenshire, in November 2008, the court heard.

The court was told no safety measures, such as guard-rails, were in place and the work had not been properly planned and controlled by Mr Mackie.

Following the case, HSE inspector Liz Standen said: "All employers carrying out work at height must ensure that the risks are fully assessed, the job is thoroughly planned and that suitable equipment is used. There is no excuse for leaving roofs under construction unguarded against falls."
