08/04/2010 - Thieves steal £40,000 of jewellery
Thieves have stolen items with an estimated value of up to £40,000 after breaking into a shop in South Yorkshire, police said.
The incident took place between 1.45am and 2.30am at two locations of the Riverside Precinct, Rotherham. Burglars broke in through the roof of the Gold Den jewellers and Lionel's Watch Shop and took rings, bracelets and high-value watches with a combined value of between £30,000 and £40,000.
Among the stolen items were many pieces manufactured at the site itself, bearing the hallmark AH. In addition, a number of the stolen items are adorned with either the badge or the initials of the local football team, Rotherham United.
South Yorkshire Police have issued a description of one of the burglars as being about 6ft, of slight build and wearing a light-coloured tracksuit.
Police are keen to hear from anyone who has any information regarding this incident, especially jewellers in the area who may have been offered any goods they believe to have been stolen.
