13/08/2010 - Gas fears force restaurant closures
Health officials have ordered the closure of two restaurants due to gas safety concerns following the death of two teenage friends from carbon monoxide poisoning in the area.
The restaurants in Portstewart, Co Londonderry, and Rasharkin, Co Antrim, were ordered to be closed by Health and Safety Executive (HSENI) officials over possible safety concerns.
A spokeswoman from HSENI said: "HSENI and gas supply companies have been active in the Castlerock and Coleraine areas to make safe a number of homes and premises as part of their ongoing emergency response."
The gas fitter who installed the faulty heater suspected to have caused the death of Aaron Davidson and Neil McFerran, both 18, in Castlerock is being questioned.
Aaron and Neil, from Newtownabbey outside Belfast, died from carbon monoxide poisoning suspected to be caused by a faulty liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) appliance at a flat at Tunnel Brae Court, while their friend Matthew McGaw survived the leak.
