27/08/2010 - Mum and child hurt at Sainsbury's

A mother and child have been injured in a supermarket after a wooden structure fell on them while they queueing for the checkout.

The pair were taken to hospital by ambulance after debris fell on them at a Sainsbury's store in Luton.

The woman in her thirties and the child, believed to be a five-year-old boy, are not thought to be seriously hurt.

Renovation work had reportedly been taking place in the checkout area.

East Of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust spokesman Gary Sanderson said: "We believe the mother and child, a boy, were struck by a piece of wood whilst they were at the checkout.

"They both received slight head injuries.

"Paramedics treated them at the scene before they were taken to the Luton & Dunstable Hospital."

A spokeswoman for the hospital said she could not confirm if the pair had been released.

A Sainsbury's spokesman said: "We can confirm that at 1pm today an internal partition at our Bramingham Park store collapsed and two customers were taken to hospital.

"We are helping the authorities with their investigation."
