10/08/2010 - Rise in London hotel room rates
London recorded a 1% year-on-year rise in hotel room rates in the first half of 2010, becoming the only UK city to have witnessed positive growth, new figures have shown.
According to statistics from travel service company Hogg Robinson Group (HRG), average room costs rose to £154.18 in the first half in London, mainly boosted by the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud crisis in April.
Hotel room prices dropped in other major UK cities, with Belfast recording the biggest decline of 12% to £81.71 during the period, while Bristol rates fell 6%.
There was a 5% fall in Manchester rooms, while Edinburgh, Leeds and Glasgow rates were down 4% during the first half.
According to HRG, average prices at Heathrow airport hotels rose from £103.06 in the first half of last year to £103.87 in the first six months of 2010 due to the volcanic ash cloud crisis.
