16/08/2010 - Robbers raid London jewellery shops
Thousands of pounds worth of jewellery has been stolen from a Grade I listed shopping arcade in the City of London.
Thieves struck the jewellers De Beer and Swiss watchmakers Omega, located in the Royal Exchange shopping centre, smashing open display cases housing the luxury goods with sledgehammers.
The gang, which got in to the shopping centre through one of its four entrances, is believed to have arrived and fled the scene in a red BMW.
City of London police are looking through CCTV footage to determine more details about the crime, but no arrests have been made so far.
Senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Steven Chandler, of the City of London Police Major Investigations Team, said: "We are currently following a number of lines of inquiry and I can reassure the public that every effort is and will be directed to bringing those responsible to justice."
The exact value of the stolen items has not yet been determined.
The Royal Exchange, built in 1565, is located between Threadneedle Street and Cornhill and houses over 30 luxury stores including Gucci, Hermes and Cartier and specialist chocolatiers and tobacconists.
