21/12/2010 - BT gives dying man £115,000 payout
BT is to pay compensation to a former employee who is dying from mesothelioma after being exposed to asbestos.
Bernard Mottram, 82, from Bath, installed telephone lines at a former secret government bunker at Corsham, Wiltshire, in the 1990s. The 35-acre underground site was equipped for a possible nuclear attack during the Cold War.
While BT does not admit that there was any asbestos exposure at the Corsham site during the 1990s, the company has agreed to make a payment of £115,000 to Mr Mottram, who only has months to live.
Mr Mottram said: "Looking back all the time I was on BT I never heard the words asbestos mentioned to be honest. No masks, nothing like that in them days."
In a statement, BT said: "For the purpose of this case BT has agreed to make a compensation payment to Mr Mottram in respect of his mesothelioma.
"The agreement has not been specific to any part of his employment. BT does not admit there was any exposure in the 1990s in Corsham."
