23/12/2010 - Builder charged for unsanitary site
A builder has appeared in court over charges that the conditions his employees had to work in were unsanitary and dangerous.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted 46-year-old Michael Connolly over the site in Littleborough, which had no toilet or washing facilities.
The site where contractors had been taken on to convert a house into flats and shops was deemed by inspectors to be dangerous.
As well as there being no toilets or washing facilities, HSE inspectors found plaster and rubble scattered all over the site on Church Street, unsafe scaffolding and live wires sticking out of plug sockets.
Inspectors deemed the site to be so dangerous that Mr Connolly was immediately served with three improvement notices and two prohibition notices following the visit on November 4, 2009.
Despite Mr Connolly's assurances that he had complied with all the notices, when inspectors revisited the site on several occasions over a 10-week period, they discovered he had still not provided adequate washing facilities for workers, including soap and hot running water.
