10/12/2010 - Scrapyard boss jailed over waste

A scrapyard owner has been sent to prison for nine months after dumping an estimated 2,000 tonnes of contaminated waste.

Staff were told by Petra Bond, 66, of Aish Park, Shebbear, to bury asbestos and other contaminated waste in an effort to cut costs, Exeter Crown Court heard.

Bond and her son Julian Goddard, of Auto Disposals and Bideford Skip Hire, were found guilty of offences under environmental regulations.

A fine of £3,750 was levied at 40-year-old Goddard, of Old Barnstaple Road, Bideford, and he was told to pay costs of £4,000.

Prosecutor Malcolm Galloway, acting for the Environment Agency, said once the full cost of the clean-up had been established, it would be funded by the defendants.

The offences took place between 2006 and 2008 - even though the firm's licence had been suspended.

The charges alleged that Bond knew the waste was being dumped even though the necessary licence was not in place.

Asbestos and mixed waste was dumped near Goodleigh Cottage. Asbestos was also buried on land close to a stream and a road, the court heard.

In addition, sand contaminated with diesel was buried after being brought in on a skip.

Goddard was found guilty of knowingly permitting deposits on the site without a licence and operating an air curtain burner without a permit.
