21/12/2010 - TV star flushes out flood causes
TV presenter Sarah Beeny will be plunged into toilet and sink waste to highlight the dangers of blocking drains.
The Property Ladder star will stand waist deep in a mock flooded bathroom at the launch of Yorkshire Water's Doing The Dirty campaign.
She said: "Whilst filming programmes I have come across problems caused by residents who have been happily pouring things like fat down their sink without realising the real problems that they could cause to their homes.
"This is why this campaign is so important. People need to realise that their toilets and sinks are not designed to take away this type of material. If they continue to dispose of things in this way they risk causing sometimes devastating damage to their property."
Flushing or pouring items such as baby and make-up wipes, sanitary items and fats down sinks or toilets led to 1,064 incidents of flooding in the last year, according to Yorkshire Water.
The company said 37% of the 18,000 blockages cleared by the company from 2009 to 2010 were as a direct result of disposing of waste in this manner.
